The mostly-deserted Gowanus district of Brooklyn rocked last night with the last show of The Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival. The festival, featuring a killer lineup comprised of the eponymous comedian and many of his hilarious friends, went on throughout last weekend at various venues throughout Brooklyn, including Park Slope’s Union Hall and the newly-opened Bell House in Gowanus.
Michael Showalter hosted last night’s event and was in top form throughout the evening. He opened the show with brand new John McCain jokes he had written in his iPhone, setting the night’s freewheeling tone. The lineup included the hilarious John Mulaney, Mirman, and Mike Birbiglia, but it was the un-announced surprise guests that really blew the lid off the place. Jim Gaffigan, John Oates (yeah, from Hall & Oates) and absudist duo The Red Wine Boys (Todd Barry and H. Jon Benjamin)…
Gaffigan was on top of his game, Oates’ portion was hilarious because no one knew what he was doing there, and the Red Wine Boys were funny, if a little longwinded and awkward (but that’s kind of the point).
Another highlight was when Mirman handed out hundreds of postcards addressed to Delta Airlines detailing why Blank (insert name) hates them because they lost Eugene Mirman’s luggage. The show was loose, fun and pure Brooklyn. Other shows throughout the weekend included Janeane Garofalo, John Oliver, David Wain and many others.
